Poor Sleep Could Harm Long-Term Heart Health

Sleeping poorly appears to shorten the number of years spent without heart problems, according to recent research. Those who were classified as “poor sleepers” lost an average of 2 heart-healthy years compared to good sleepers.

In addition, those with a sleep-related breathing disorder lost an average of 6.7-7.3 heart-healthy years, while those who had clinical insomnia lost up to 3.8 heart-healthy years.

The study examined sleeping habits and difficulties as well as cardiovascular history for over 300,000 middle-aged adults. Researchers used self-reported sleep experiences to divide participants into three sleep categories— poor, intermediate, and healthy— and analyzed clinically diagnosed sleep disorders separately.

According to the study authors, these findings suggest that sleep quality should be discussed alongside sleep duration when it comes to supporting better health outcomes.

Daily Multivitamin Improves Memory in Older Adults

Taking a daily multivitamin can help slow age-related memory decline, a new study has found. This supports the findings of other recent research showing that taking a multivitamin can improve overall cognition, memory recall, and attention in older adults.

“Cognitive aging is a top health concern for older adults, and this study suggests that there may be a simple, inexpensive way to help older adults slow down memory decline,” says Adam M. Brickman, a study leader and professor of neuropsychology.

The study involved over 3,500 adults over age 60 who were assigned to take either a multivitamin or a placebo for 3 years. Participants were assessed through online cognitive assessments at the end of each year to evaluate their memory function.

The researchers believe these findings support “growing evidence” that proper nutrition is key for optimizing brain function throughout old age and state that multivitamins could be a “safe, accessible, and affordable” way to retain memory function in older adults.

Anti-Inflammation & Other Top Research-Backed CBD Oil Benefits

CBD oil is often marketed as a cure-all, in spite of the fact that rigorous scientific studies evaluating its benefits are limited. However, the quality research that has been conducted so far is very promising. Along with documented effects for aiding childhood seizure disorders, CBD oil has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It also has potential for use in cancer therapy but is not yet approved for this purpose (in the U.S.). The biggest challenge is sourcing quality CBD oil, since the industry is very unregulated. 14 Surprising Causes of Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation (vs. acute inflammation) is the “bad” type of inflammation linked to numerous chronic diseases. It’s often triggered by lifestyle and environmental factors, some of which have not been pinpointed until recently. A few of the more surprising culprits include over exercising, certain vegetable oils, and too much sitting. These take their place alongside more well-recognized triggers like sugar, refined carbohydrates, and stress. (More)

Beetroot Significantly Increases Muscle Force During Exercise

Beets are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, including a group of compounds known as betalains, which are responsible for giving the roots their incandescent color. Recently, a study found that consuming nitrate— the active compound found in beetroot juice— can increase muscle force while exercising. This could be a significant finding given that muscle loss and weakness frequently occur with age. (More)

Phthalates May Disrupt Hormone Needed for Healthy Pregnancy

Phthalates are a group of chemicals commonly found in plastics, personal care products, and cosmetics. They have already been linked to hormone disruption in previous studies, and new research has revealed that they may specifically disrupt a hormone important for a healthy pregnancy. The hormone is known as placental corticotropin releasing hormone (pCRH) and plays a role in promoting the onset of labor. When it rises too early in pregnancy, complications like high blood pressure and preterm birth can occur. (More)
